The Maths Helpdesk is happy to announce a new round of study groups starting next term!

Last year we held the successful Deep Learning Study Group over ten weeks with members from all over the campus. We now want to introduce several new study groups that allow for a dissemination of applied areas of mathematics, statistics, and computing aiming to help researchers at Imperial in any and all departments. These groups will be held over a shorter period, hopefully 5 weeks, but will be variable due to subject matter.

Creating a study group has many benefits. First, you will learn how your area of expertise can be applied to a variety of research problems across many different fields. Second, you’ll get to meet researchers in Imperial who you can directly help. Third, you will receive the GTA demonstrating rate of 25 pounds per hour and will be asked to work for 2 hours per week for the study group. Finally, this is great for your CV. Whether you’re looking for a postdoc and need teaching experience or need a way to demonstrate your knowledge of some area, forming a study group will look great.

If you would like to either attend or create your own, please let us know in the form below.

We've got funding!

We're pleased to announce that the Maths Helpdesk has received funding from the Vice Provost for Research and we're looking forward to another year's problem solving.

New plans for 2017/18

We're expanding our activities to include:

  • Fortnightly drop-in sessions, where you can continue to work on collaborations too
  • Crash courses in widely-applicable techniques or subjects. If you have any suggestions, This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. - we have funding to pay instructors
  • Collaborative research hackathons on research problems from across College

We need your help

In order to do this, we need your help. We want to recruit a larger team to run the helpdesk, including representatives from all the major research areas. Your role would be simple and hopefully enjoyable: come to the drop-in sessions regularly and answer questions, and moderate questions on your subject area on the helpdesk solver area to ensure they're getting responded to. You can also get involved in organising and delivering hackathons and crash courses, but there's no obligation to do so if you don't want to.

If you want to get involved, come to the next drop-in session on the 23rd of November. If you can't make this, then This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and we can answer your questions.

Are you stuck with some maths in your research?

Come to the Maths Helpdesk Monthly Drop-in Event!

Our team of solvers will be there to help you with your maths problem.

Enjoy free lunch with fellow researchers from inside and outside your department.

When: Thursday, 3rd November, 12-1pm

Where: Huxley Building, Level 1, Room 139

We will be hosting these drop-in events fortnightly during term time, so if you can’t make this one we encourage to try make the next one on the 7th of December. See you there!

Thanks for the interesting questions and answers from the attendees at our February drop-in session!
